DATA Event 4.0 @ The Joy Gallery RedSpace

February 28, 2010

Last night I went to a very interesting event at The Joy Gallery. Celebrating DATA’s 8 year anniversary the event hosted a number of artists who introduced some current and previous projects they had been working on. In particular I enjoyed Anne Maree Barry’s piece Rialto Twirlers; a documentary film depicting a group of young teenage cheerleaders from inner city Dublin. She showed us some video documentation of them performing at competitions and her entry into the Jameson Dublin Film Festival. Here is a short test video from this work, I love the slow motion – it’s quite poetic indeed!

Here is an excerpt about her piece taken from the data website http://www.data.ie/wordpress/

Anne Maree Barry
Anne Maree Barry (1979) is a film artist based in Dublin, Ireland.
Her experimental short film Covered Road was the winner of Best Irish Short at the Darklight Film Festival, Dublin. Rialto Twirlersat JDIFF is Barry’s first documentary short film. Young people growing up in a marginalised community in inner city Dublin, Rialto, are exposed to the social problems that accompany poverty. They find a space for themselves through creatively engaging in majorette groups, a traditional feature of the social landscape in working-class areas. In a swirl of pom poms, twirling batons, sparkles and feathers, Rialto Twirlers captures a secret moment of unity and beauty as a dance troop rehearse their routine for the final time before a national majorette competition. Not as acrobatic as their American cheer leader counterparts or as military as their marching bands founders, the Rialto Twirlers are a creative fusion of hard graft, skill and energy that is associated with our pluralistic age, in which anything is possible.

Another outstanding part of the night included a music set at the end of the event with a group called PushMoveClick They make their own synths and use a variety of equipment to produce their sound (such as mpc’s, home made noise boxes, fx pedals, drum machines -for more info see their website). Their set was free style in the way that nothing they did was pre-thought out, it was all improvisation. Overall, a very enjoyable set and night.
